Abstract

Nam Kinh Bac Kinh is a verse-narrative written in Vietnamese Romanized script in Southern Vietnam, adapted from the Nom narrative poetry entitled The Story of Nam Kinh Bac Kinh and other Romanized verse-narratives previously published in the region. This study examines three Romanized versions of Nam Kinh Bac Kinh, published by Dang Le Nghi, Nguyen Ba Thoi, and Khau Vo Nghi, through the lens of adaptation theory. By analyzing the publication formats, narrative structures, and poetic language of these adaptations in comparison with the original Nôm work, the paper highlights how these texts reflect both continuity and transformation. The findings emphasize the creative reinterpretation evident in the Romanized adaptations and highlight their cultural significance in introducing new values relevant to the era of adapted works.
