Abstract

Ho Bieu Chanh is one of the most outstanding writers in South Vietnamese literature of the 20th century. He produced a huge amount of works, particularly known for his strength in the novel genre, in which he conveyed moral lessons, life philosophies, local cultural values using a simple style of writing and the South Vietnamese dialect. In addition, he also paid significant attention to portraying the landscape in the works, not merely as a static backdrop to the plot, but also conveying various meanings. This article is an attempt to apply landscape criticism in reading the novel Cay dang mui doi by Ho Bieu Chanh, to explore the function of landscape elements in expressing the messages that the author wanted to convey in the work, also reflect the connection between humans and living space. Throughout that, we aims to propose a promising approach in researching Ho Bieu Chanh’s literary accomplishment in particular and the South Vietnamese literature of the early 20th century in general.
