Abstract

The period from 1954 to 1975 was a distinctive historical era in Vietnam, marked by the country’s division and the South’s emergence asa center of intense political, social, and cultural upheavals. This sociohistorical context profoundly influenced the perspectives and mindset of poets, giving rise to diverse literary tendencies. Alongside revolutionary, anti-war, and protest poetry, love-themed verse also flourished, with prominent names such as Vũ Hoàng Chương, Đinh Hùng, Minh Đức Hoài Trinh, Cung Trầm Tưởng, Nguyên Sa, Thanh Tâm Tuyền, Tô Thùy Yên, Phạm Thiên Thư, Du Tử Lê, Nguyễn Tất Nhiên. This paper examines two key spiritual dimensions that consistently emerge in their works: awakening and redemption through love, and for love. Awakening represents the awareness of love’s fragility, imperfection, and human powerlessness in the face of history. Redemption, by contrast, refers to love as a refuge and salvation for the heart, transforming love poetry into a form of deliverance that nurtures a longing for beauty within a precarious reality.
