Abstract

This study presents the process of designing, implementing and evaluating a school mental health care model at Luong The Vinh High School (HCMC), with the aim of testing the model’s level of response to the criteria for building a happy school according to Decision 3442/QD-SGDĐT of the Department of Education and Training of HCMC. The model was designed as an integrated framword incorporating school-based psychological screening, preventive  and intervention activities, social-emotional education and the development of a positive school environment. The study employed an embedded mixed-methods design, combining quantitative data derived from the DASS-21 scale with qualitative data collected from activity products, photographic documentation, counseling diaries, and student evaluations. The results show that the model supported school psychological screening for 1359 students, detecting 7.35% with severe depression and 13.85% with severe anxiety. During the experiment year, 382 students received intervention, of whome 30.1% participated in intensive individual counseling. Mental health education and prevention programs for students, teachers, and parents were implemented diversely and effectively, contributing to raising awareness, building social-emotional competence, and promoting school happiness values. The study suggests a school mental health care model suitable for the Vietnamese context, contributing to clarifying the role of school counseling rooms as an essential support institution in the strategy of building happy schools.
