GRASSLANDS IN THE BIOSPHERE OF CHINA (CASE STUDIES: WOLF TOTEM (JIANG RONG) AND TIBETAN MASTIFF (YANG ZHIJUN)
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article examines the role of the steppe in China's cultural-ecological biosphere using the method of ecocriticism. The study reveals that both authors assert the grassland is not a backward periphery but a fundamental core constructing the Huaxia identity. However, the two works present contrasting perspectives: Jiang Rong exalts "wolf nature" (wildness, competition) as the source of historical strength, whereas Yang Zhijun upholds "mastiff nature" (loyalty, morality) as the ethical ideal of Confucianism. Ultimately, the article argues that the unity between the "center" (civilization) and the "periphery" (wilderness) can only be achieved through the reconciliation of indigenous religious beliefs and modern scientific knowledge.
