CHINESE CHARACTER WRITING ERRORS AMONG VIETNAMESE LEARNERS AT THE INTERMEDIATE-TO-UPPER-INTERMEDIATE LEVEL: A CASE STUDY OF THIRD-YEAR STUDENTS AT HO CHI MINH CITY UNIVERSITY OF EDUCATION

Abstract
This study investigates Chinese character writing errors among 24 third-year students from the Chinese Department at Ho Chi Minh City University of Education through an error analysis of their midterm writing corpus. A total of 256 errors were identified, among which phonetic confusion (21.88%), stroke miswriting (18.75%), and stroke addition or omission (15.63%) were the most frequent types. The findings indicate that the learners’ difficulties mainly involve phonological–orthographic interference and unstable orthographic representation. Further analysis suggests that these errors may be related to learners’ reliance on phonological cues, the structural complexity of Chinese characters, and limitations in orthographic discrimination and retrieval. The findings may provide a reference for Chinese character writing instruction in teaching Chinese to
Vietnamese learners.
