Abstract

Foodborne zoonotic trematodes pose a public health problem in many countries, especially in Southeast Asia. Previous studies have shown that catfish (Pangasius larnaudii and Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) cultured in aquaculture ponds in Binh Chanh area, Ho Chi Minh City gets infected with fish-borne zoonotic trematodes. Here we investigate whether habitats supplying the ponds with water may contribute to the transmission by carrying intermediate hosts and/ or cercariae into the ponds.  A study on trematode larvae (cercariae stage) obtained from snails collected in 16 small canals supplying water directly to catfish ponds in Binh Chanh area, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam was conducted in January (the dry season) and June (the wet season) in 2023. A total of 2065 snails representing 9 species were examined. Four species were infected with trematode (cercariae stage) i.e. Indoplanorbis exustus, Lymnaea viridis, Bithynia siamensis, and Melanoides tuberculata. Four cercariae morphotypes, furcocercous, pleurolophocercous, xiphidio and echinostome were found. Further research on all water sources supplying to catfish cultured in ponds should be done so that the trematodes can be controlled, and catfish can be produced with cercariae free to contribute to sustainable aquaculture development and food safety.
