Abstract

Modal verbs constitute a crucial component of modern Chinese grammar and represent one of the earliest and most frequently encountered grammatical categories for learners of Chinese as a second language. In recent years, a growing body of research has emerged in the field of teaching Chinese modal verbs within the context of international Chinese language education. Drawing upon literature indexed in the CNKI database, this study conducts a bibliometric and systematic review of relevant research. It examines the developmental trajectory of the field and provides an in-depth analysis of current research foci across several dimensions, including contrastive analysis between Chinese and other languages, learner error analysis, acquisition process and order, and pedagogical implementation. The findings reveal prominent research trends and thematic distributions, summarize the features of existing studies, and propose future research directions and recommendations.
