Abstract

Tay Nguyen coi nguon (Central Highlands – The Origins, 1997), directed by Le Duc Tien and produced by Vietnam Feature Film Studio and Tay Nguyen – mien mo tuong (Central Highlands – A Mythical Land, 2009), directed by Doan Huy Giao and produced by VTV Da Nang, are two representative cases of documentary films about the Central Highlands – a unique cultural region of Vietnam that holds strategic significance for the country’s sustainable development. Following a systemic and interdisciplinary approach, this qualitative study applies Bill Nichols’s documentary theory to conduct a comparative analysis of the two films from a genre perspective. Central Highlands - The Origins is a cinematic documentary integrating the Expository and Poetic modes, while Central Highlands – A Mythical Land is a television documentary integrating the Expository and Participatory modes. Despite their differences in documentary modes, both films converge in conveying a shared message on Central Highlands culture in relation to sustainable development. The research findings are of scientific and practical significance, contributing to the study, teaching, criticism, and practice of documentary filmmaking.
