Abstract
The article examines the model of the modern subject through the figure of Western – educated intellectuals in Vietnamese novels from 1930 to 1945. Under the impact of urbanization and the influx of Western civilization, Vietnamese novels of the period recorded a shift from the traditional model of community – based individuals to the emergence of self – conscious modern subjects. By analyzing representative characters of Vietnamese novels from 1930 to 1945, the article demonstrates that Western – educated intellectuals became central figures expressing transformations in the consciousness of modern individuals. These characters embody the rise of individual consciousness, aspirations for personal freedom in love and marriage, rational thinking, and spiritual crises experienced by urban subjects. The study therefore argues that Vietnamese novels during 1930 – 1945 not only reflected social transformations but also recorded the emergence of the modern subject in Vietnamese literature.
