ASSESSING STUDENTS’ COMPETENCIES AND QUALITIES IN PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN SOUTHEASTERN VIETNAM

Abstract

Students’ competencies and qualities are core elements of educational development aimed at preparing students to become global citizens, who are adaptable to change, contribute positively to society, and support the maintenance and improvement of education quality in school. These competencies and qualities also reflect the comprehensive nature of the Vietnamese educational curriculumThis study investigates and evaluates perceptions of students’ competencies and qualities through a survey involving 3,831 teachers and 5,702 students across public secondary schools in Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, and Tay Ninh. The survey consisted of 11 items. The findings shows that teachers and students in Ho Chi Minh City and Binh Duong evaluates 11 items higher than in Tay Ninh; Independent sample t-test results revealed statistically significant differences between teachers’ and students’ evaluations in 9 out of 11 items in Ho Chi Minh City and all 11 items in Binh Duong, whereas no statistically significant differences were found in Tay Ninh. In addition, ANOVA results showed statistically significant differences among the three provinces for all 11 items in the teacher group and 10 out of 11 items in the student group.
