FROM THE IMPORTANCE OF INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE TO REDEFINING THE PURPOSES OF LEARNING ENGLISH FOR VIETNAMESE LEARNERS

Abstract

 

In the era of globalization, English has transcended the boundaries of English-speaking countries and has become the language to connect people from different cultures. In such a context, the teaching of English in Vietnam needs to take Intercultural Communication Competence (ICC) as a target for learners. This article attempts to raise Vietnamese EFL teachers’ awareness about the importance of ICC for Vietnamese learners. Furthermore, the article introduces a new language teaching approach, Intercultural Language Teaching (ILT), which can assist in enhancing language learners’ ICC in English lessons. The article also outlines some strategies for applying ILT into teaching English in the context of Vietnam. The article may be useful for language policy makers and teachers of English in revising the current policies as well as innovating English language teaching methodologies in Vietnam. Thereby, there can be some reforms in teaching, testing, and assessing English in order to develop Vietnamese English learners’ ICC.
