Abstract

In STEM activities in classroom, student engagement using oral language is an important feature. Therefore we are interested in understanding the types of classroom participation that use students' spoken language. In this study, we used the Engagement and Participation in Classroom - Science Questionnaire (EPIC-S) to survey Vietnamese students' classroom participation behaviours using spoken language as well as their perceptions of teachers' expectations for participation behaviours. The survey was conducted with 883 students at some public high schools in the North, Central and South areas of Vietnam. The data were analyzed using SPSS 20. The results showed that Vietnamese students tend to participate in silence, mainly focusing on listening, taking notes and trying to understand lectures. However, a considerable number of students not only take notes or listen but also want to join the class by expressing in spoken language. The results will contribute to understanding more of teaching methods in general and STEM education in particular in Vietnam.
