THE IMPACTS OF TEACHING AIDS ON TEACHING MATHEMATICS FOR 4TH GRADERS: AN EMPIRICAL STUDY IN VIETNAM
Main Article Content
Abstract
In competence-oriented education, teaching aids play a significant role in teaching and learning mathematics at the elementary level. While teaching aids have been utilized in practice, research on their effectiveness remains limited, particularly with the 2018 curriculum. This study aimed to examine the impact of using teaching aids in teaching abstract mathematical concepts to fourth-grade students. Employing a quasi-experimental design with pre-and post-tests, the study collected and analyzed quantitative data from 63 fourth-grade students in a primary school in Ho Chi Minh City. Two dependent variables were measured: (1) test scores, representing learning outcomes, and (2) attitudes towards mathematics. The findings indicate that the experimental group showed a significant increase in average test scores and an improvement in learning attitudes, especially the sub-scale mathematics academic self-concept and perceived value of mathematics. This study provides empirical evidence for the effectiveness of using teaching aids to enhance mathematics learning, reinforcing the belief and enriching ideas for elementary teachers.
