A COLLECTION OF SHORT STORIES “MUA NHA NAM” BY NGUYEN HUY THIEP: A SEMIOTIC PERSPECTIVE
Main Article Content
Abstract
In the landscape of Vietnamese literature in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, Nguyen Huy Thiep emerged as one of the most prominent figures. His stories captivate readers by addressing pressing societal issues during the reform period. Another factor contributing to the appeal of Nguyen Huy Thiep’s work is his use of a multi-layered system of symbols. In his short story collection “Nha Nam Rain,” two particularly noteworthy symbols stand out: water symbols and mythological symbols, both of which carry profound philosophical and aesthetic meanings. These symbols reflect the philosophy of historical discourse and human destiny through the ups and downs of time, embodying the enduring values of the national cultural foundation amid the country’s modernization. This article explores these aspects in greater depth, aiming to disseminate them in the spirit of humanism and aesthetics. Through semiotic analysis, psychoanalysis, biographical criticism, and an analytical-synthetic approach, this paper aims to clarify the aesthetic and ideological significance of these two symbols.
