DEVELOPING EXPERIMENTAL TOOLS FOR TEACHING THE TOPIC “SPECIFIC HEAT CAPACITY” TO ENHANCE STUDENTS’ EXPERIMENTAL COMPETENCE

Abstract

Thermal physics is an important part of the Grade 12 Physics curriculum. Knowledge of thermal physics revolves around the movement of molecules in solids, liquids, and gases. Within this domain, the topic of “specific heat capacity” provides insights into the phase changes of substances. Although this content has broad practical relevance in everyday life, it is often abstract and challenging for students to comprehend. Therefore, enhancing experimental facilities to improve visualization and experiential learning is necessary to support students’ conceptual understanding and scientific reasoning. Understanding this need, this study develops an experimental kit for determining the “specific heat capacity” of a substance to assist teachers in the teaching process, aligning with the relevant requirements in the 2018 national curriculum. This kit also allows students to practice, helping them retain knowledge more effectively. In designing and constructing the kit, the study employed an experimental design. This kit addresses existing shortcomings, making it more streamlined, easier to use, cost-effective, and highly accurate. Thus, teachers and students can trust and confidently use this experimental kit.
