COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF THE ĐANG INDICATOR AND -TEIRU STRUCTURE: AN ASPECTUAL PERSPECTIVE

Abstract
The Vietnamese indicator "đang" and the Japanese structure "-teiru" both convey the imperfective aspect. This article employs descriptive and comparative linguistic methods to highlight the similarities and differences between these two grammatical units. The findings demonstrate that "đang" indicates ongoing actions and denotes a limited or temporary situation. In contrast, "-teiru" conveys ongoing actions as well as states of results, habits, and experiences. Both grammatical units can be used with dynamic and static situations; however, "-teiru" can combine with certain static verbs that express cognitive states and situational nature, while "đang" cannot. These findings suggest promising directions for future research on situational categories in Vietnamese and Japanese.
