A SURVEY OF QUESTION TYPES IN ELEMENTARY-LEVEL VIETNAMESE LANGUAGE TEXTBOOKS FOR FOREIGN LEARNERS: FREQUENCY OF OCCURRENCE AND EXPLANATION OF STRUCTURE AND MEANING
Main Article Content
Abstract
The process of language acquisition and practice at the elementary level plays a pivotal role in shaping and developing foreign language competence. Based on this premise, the present study investigates the types of questions found in Vietnamese language textbooks designed for foreign learners at the elementary level. Through statistical analysis, the study classifies and examines the frequency of occurrence, instructional organization, and the explanation of syntactic and semantic structures of various question forms presented in the textbooks. The findings indicate that questions using interrogative pronouns—especially those involving the word gì (“what”)—appear most frequently. In contrast, questions employing the conjunction hay (“or”) and discourse particles, except for à, are generally less common. While question types are relatively evenly distributed, the depth of presentation and amount of content vary across textbooks. Additionally, the results reveal that explanations of question structures in these textbooks tend to rely heavily on grammatical rules, with limited focus on semantic and pragmatic aspects. These findings provide practical insights for improving the design and instruction of Vietnamese question forms for foreign language learners.
