Abstract

Existentialism emerged as a Western philosophical movement following World War II, in a context marked by the profound crisis of human existence brought about by the aftermath of war. This line of thought rapidly spread and exerted a significant influence on Southern Vietnamese literature prior to 1975, particularly within the realm of urban literary expression. The press - especially Bách Khoa magazine - became a forum where writers and artists explored existentialist ideas, featuring notable figures such as Bùi Giáng, Minh Đức Hoài Trinh, and Đoàn Thêm. Within this literary current, Vũ Hân may not have appeared frequently, yet each of his poetic expressions carried profound philosophical depth. His poetry is distinguished by clear manifestations of existentialist themes such as solitude, anxiety, engagement, and the aspiration to transcend. A critical exploration of Vũ Hân’s poetry offers a compelling opportunity to elucidate the tormented journey of existential being he portrays, while also revealing a contemplative philosophical voice that contributes to shaping and enriching the contours of modern Vietnamese poetry.
