Abstract

The Bách Khoa magazine exerted a profound influence on writers associated with Southern Vietnamese urban literature from 1954 to 1975, providing a platform on which writers could experiment with new forms and explore previously uncharted aesthetic and intellectual territory. Within this context, Vũ Hân appeared relatively infrequently, yet each contribution revealed a distinctive poetic voice marked by aesthetic richness and intellectual depth. His poetry is characterized by persistent questioning that expresses skepticism about the existential search for meaning. Viewed through the lens of existentialism, this study examines the central issues articulated in Vũ Hân’s poetry, including loneliness, anxiety, commitment, and transcendence. Furthermore, the article not only elucidates Vũ Hân’s contributions to the poetry published in Bách Khoa and, more broadly, to Southern Vietnamese urban literature, but also portrays him as a poet of considerable promise in modern Vietnamese literature.
