TEACHING THE SHORT STORY “CAI OI!” BY NGUYEN NGOC TU FROM A GENRE PERSPECTIVE
Main Article Content
Abstract
The 2018 Vietnamese Literature curriculum by the Ministry of Education and Training not only inherits valuable works that were previously taught, but also supplies and updates contemporary pieces, among which there are numerous significant works appropriate for the psycho-physiology of the current generation of students. This brings a sense of freshness, diversity, and appeal to the literature curriculum, but also causes some minor difficulties for teachers. However, the crux of the matter is that teachers still have to teach reading comprehension according to the genre’s characteristics, whether the work is familiar or unfamiliar. This is an essential requirement that is tied to the nature of the subject. This article presents the distinct features of the modern short story genre and an approach to this genre when teaching reading comprehension in high schools. The article selects the short story “Cai oi!” by Nguyen Ngoc Tu, a work included in the curriculum for the first time, to analyze deeply the genre's characteristics. From this, high school teachers and students can find more useful information that serves effectively for teaching and learning.
