Abstract

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) are two emerging trends that are increasingly emphasized in contemporary education. Several studies on STEM education indicate that integrating ESD into learning topics is both feasible and meaningful. Other studies also show that certain STEM topics incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) technology serve as effective solutions when Science, Technology, or Informatics is the core subject. However, the integration of ESD and AI has received little attention when Mathematics plays the central role in STEM topics. This paper proposes a training procedure for pre-service mathematics teachers, aiming to simultaneously develop content knowledge related to ESD and technological competence in GenAI within the TPACK framework. The procedure is developed based on the principles of Training Engineering (Ingénierie de formation) and consists of six stages: (1) identifying required supplementary knowledge; (2) selecting appropriate integrated modules; (3) determining content, timing, and duration; (4) designing the training plan; (5) implementation; and (6) evaluation and improvement. Initial results demonstrate the feasibility of the procedure, and the study contributes a structured and replicable training model for teacher education programs, oriented toward the sustainable integration of new technologies in K–12 STEM education.
