Abstract

This research aims to analyze how learning motivation and self-efficacy are interpreted among first-year students who are majoring in English, concentrating on developing students’ English listening comprehension.. The research integrates both quantitative data in the form of questionnaires and qualitative data through semi-structured interviews in a mixed-methods way. The results indicate the existence of diverse factors influencing the level of motivation, and in particular instrumental motivation is shown to be the most pervasive but equally sizeable intrinsic and integrative motivation is present. Self-efficacy was moderate to high across levels of control except with regard to the ability of the students to listen and comprehend which was believed to be high. The peculiar circumstances of English students such as those majoring in English were also brought to the fore especially concerning how motivation and self-efficacy were exhibited in them. Contextual factors such as internship experiences as well as English media consumption also appeared to have significant effects on these psychological constructs. This study adds to existing literature with understanding of the motivational and self-efficacy dynamics of students that major in English in Vietnam and contribute to the teaching methodology or designing the curricula for teaching English language in higher education institutions.
