Abstract

“给” is one of the polysemous words in Chinese. It functions as a verb, a preposition, and a particle, with a relatively rich range of meanings. By analyzing the interlanguage corpus of Vietnamese learners of Chinese, a total of 2,194 instances of “给” were found (Elementary level: 892; Intermediate level: 767; Advanced level: 535). The proposed acquisition order is based on two sequences: frequency of correct usage and implicational scaling. According to the frequency of correct usage, the acquisition order of the meanings of “给” is: 给7 > 给1 > 给9 > 给4 > 给3 > 给2 > 给8 > 给10 > 给6 > 给5. Based on the implicational scaling, the order is: 给1 > 给2 > 给4 > 给6 > 给7 > 给9 > 给10 > 给8 > 给5 > 给3. By integrating the two sequences, the acquisition of the various meanings of “给” by Vietnamese students can be divided into two groups. The first group, which includes the meanings that are easier to acquire, consists of: 给1, 给7, 给4, 给2, and 给9. The second group, which includes meanings that are more difficult to acquire, consists of: 给6, 给3, 给8, 给10, and 给5.
