Abstract

This study reviews related literature on the historical development of interdisciplinary research on Western literature and music, arguing that the field’s evolution can be understood as a logical progression of its methodologies. The inquiry began with formal comparative methods, which then advanced towards the establishment of structural classification systems. Subsequently, this research area underwent an important interpretive shift influenced by cultural studies, directing attention to the broader socio-historical contexts in which literary and musical works are embedded. The various approaches were finally brought together and synthesized within the theoretical framework of intermediality. By outlining this theoretical map, the current study provides a foundational conceptual framework and a systematic glossary of key terms, thereby creating a reference point that can inform and stimulate further specialized research within the Vietnamese academic context.
